Meet the Artist: A little bit about Emma..
Painting and drawing has been Emma’s lifelong language, a way to capture emotion and tell untold stories. Originally from Scotland, she has always felt a deep connection to art, using it as a means to explore and express the world around her. After graduating with Honours from The Glasgow School of Art, she relocated to Te Wai Pounamu in 2006, where she now calls Queenstown home. As a resident artist at Te Atamira, she spends most days immersed in her studio, painting and pushing the boundaries of her creative practice.
Working primarily with paints, she constantly experiments with movement, using mark making and the manipulation of form to evoke a strong sense of feminine expression. While portraiture and figurative work are at the heart of her practice, she also draws inspiration from the textures and colours of Central Otago’s landscapes. Through each brushstroke, she seeks to create work that resonates on a personal level, capturing the strength and vulnerability of the human experience.
When she’s not in the studio, she channels her creativity into illustration and design, working on select projects for her business, Studio Peers.
Latest Works:
In her latest series Emma explores the concept of Floating, an exploration of movement and colour between sky and sea. This series reflects on the quiet strength that exists within stillness, inviting viewers into a world of suspended motion and atmospheric depth.
